Government Introduces Emergency Measures to Tackle Fuel and Economic Pressure

Pakistan is under increasing economic pressure and rising fuel costs and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced a set of emergency austerity and energy-saving measures. The new government directives are meant to decrease the fuel usage, lower the administration cost and control the current energy crisis.

The steps encompass cutting down 50 percent of the fuel allowances of government vehicles, temporary suspension of ministerial salaries and adjustments to the working conditions of government offices and learning institutions.

According to the officials, these measures are included in the larger effort to stabilize the finances in the country and lower fuel consumption at the time that the world markets are facing a state of uncertainty regarding the energy markets.

50% Cut in Fuel Allowances for Government Vehicles

Among the most notable actions that were announced is that all the government vehicles were going to have their fuel allowances cut by half. The move is supposed to reduce the amount of fuel used by government departments.

Governments feel the step will greatly reduce government fuel costs and make departments more efficient in their transport use.

Government offices are supposed to restrict the unnecessary tours and only focus on the necessary transportation.

Ministers’ Salaries Suspended for Two Months

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also declared that federal ministers would not get their salaries within the next two months in another significant step.

It is being made to appear as a show of unity with the people in tough economic times. According to government officials, the action illustrates that the leadership is ready to shoulder the financial burden as the nation goes through the economic instabilities.

Four-Day Work Week for Government Offices

In an attempt to further cut down on the operational expenses, as well as fuel consumption, the government has instructed public sector offices to switch to 4 working days per week.

According to the new arrangement, the government offices will work four working days as opposed to five working days. This move will allow officials to minimize commuter fuel and electricity consumption in government structures.

The policy is to be temporary when the government reviews its effectiveness on saving fuel and efficiency of operations.

Work-From-Home Policy for 50% of Staff

Together with work week, the government has also implemented a 50 per cent work at home policy to half of its employees.

The departments have been given the instruction to divide employees into groups with half of the workforce working remotely and the rest of the staff working at offices. The target is to overcome the traffic jams, fuel usage in transport sector and energy usage in offices.

Most government departments will need to have remote working systems in place immediately.

Schools to Close Temporarily

Schools will also take leave starting next week as part of the emergency measures that will work throughout the country. The move will minimize transportation activities and energy consumption related to school functions.

The education authorities will be expected to publish elaborate timetables on the temporary shutdown.

It is being advised to parents and students to counteract this by getting the updated version of the news via official communications in education departments.

Universities and Colleges Shift to Online Learning

In the meantime, the entire sphere of higher education has been instructed to switch to online classes at once.

The process of learning will be carried out using digital learning platforms by universities and colleges so that students will not be affected by the temporary restrictions in their education.

Education officials assert that online learning systems that were created in the past emergencies will also be applied here to ensure continuity.

Government Aims to Reduce Fuel Consumption

The government claims that the combined processes, such as decreased traveling, remote working, and temporary school shutdowns, are supposed to reduce fuel demand in the nation tremendously.

Authorities feel that such measures will aid in controlling the current economic pressure and give time to authorities to stabilize energy supply and prices.

The situation might change in the following weeks, and several supplementary measures could be declared, as well as updated.
